This is my uncensored story of how I got rid of my vaginal fishy smell, itching, and discharge, all common symptoms of Bacterial Vaginosis. I’ll tell you about my ups and downs, what stuff didn’t work and finally the one thing that did help get rid of my vaginal odour once and for all.

I am a 29 year old married mother of 2, with plans for more. My BV problems began during my first pregnancy. I still have no idea why. They continued through the birth of my second child. It drove me nuts! If you’re reading this, I know that you’ve dealt with the nasty fishy vaginal smell that accompanies this condition. It really does get in the way of normal, healthy relationships.

I am not a promiscuous woman. I know doctors will ask if you’ve had multiple sex partners, since that’s one of the contributing factors of BV, but I am a “1-man woman” (this vaginal odour thing made life very uncomfortable for intimate times between my husband and myself. I would clean up like crazy before we began our intimacy and was constantly self-conscious during the whole episode. As soon as we were done, I was off to the bathroom ASAP to clean up again…It was  embarrassing and humiliating!! ).

I went online looking for answers to the vaginal fishy smell. I tried a lot of the natural remedies, including using non-perfumed soaps, stopping any douching, wearing loose fitting cotton underwear, and having my husband use condoms. I finally went to the doctor. She said that I had Bacterial Vaginosis. Never heard of it! But, the doc told me that it was the most common vaginal infection in child bearing women. She prescribed antibiotics which I used for a few weeks.

At first I saw a difference. The smell and itching was less but it didn’t last very long. I started having “relapses” about a month later. So, I went back for more antibiotics. But that really worried me, because I know that excessive antibiotic use will actually hurt the good bacteria in my body and set me up for more infections in the future. The last thing I needed was to get rid of BV only to get yeast infection.

My search continued, but it was all pretty much the same routine..except for a few dietary changes and nutritional supplements along the way. The costs were getting higher and I was getting frustrated, to say the least.

I quite accidentally stumbled upon a book written by a fellow-sufferer that made the outlandish claim that I could get rid of not only the vaginal smell, but the whole Bacterial Vaginosis infection, in 3 days. Of course, who believes that? Well, I didn’t, but you know how it is…You get desperate and will try anything. So, I downloaded the book. I immediately was enthralled by what “secrets” this woman was revealing to me. She covered a bunch of mistakes that women make that set us up for BV…and I was making those mistakes. What she was teaching me was good for the whole body and would set me up to be healthier than I’ve ever been. She put everything together into a very simple 3-step plan THAT WORKED!! I followed her plan to a “tee” and found that everything worked just the way she said it would.

Now, I must confess that this program didn’t get rid of my vaginal smell in 3 days…but within a week the smell, discharge, and itching were gone. I was dumbfounded. Can you tell I am excited about this new lease  on life? I’m happy, my husband is happy, I think even the kids can sense a different energy in Mom. Did you know that Bacterial Vaginosis is the most common vaginal infection in child bearing women? It may surprise you to know that it is most common in pregnant women. As a matter of fact, it is really about an imbalance of bacteria, where the “bad” bacteria outnumbers the “good bacteria” (I’ll bet you didn’t know that you had “good” bacteria in your body that you actually need. That’s why antibiotics are tough on the body. They not only go after the bad bacteria but they also kill the good ones! Research shows that 70% of the women who take the antibiotic regimen will have repeated attacks of the infection).

Believe it or not, it is not really known what causes this bacterial imbalance. It is known, however, that some activities, like douching and having multiple sex partners or a new sex partner puts women at risk of getting this infection. Now, having said that, it appears primarily in women who have gone through pregancy…but women who have never had sexual relations can also get it. So, bottom line is that it’s not completely clear why women get this thing. The CDC tells us that BV can increase a woman’s risk of HIV infection and other STD’s, like Herpes Simplex Virus, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.

Symptoms include a strong and unpleasant vaginal odour (fishy smell), itching around the outside of the vagina, white or gray discharge, and possibly burning during urination. Not very comfortable, as you can imagine.

Some home remedies include not washing your vagina more than 2-3 times a day and using only non-perfumed soap, no douching, have protected sex and using condoms until you are completely free of BV, wear light underwear only made of cotton material, and placing a wrapped ice pack or cold facecloth on the vagina. These remedies usually only provide a temporary relief of the symptoms of BV. Something different has to be done to permanently get rid of the vaginal fishy smell, itching, and discharge. But, I’ll get into that in my next post.

I went through quite a bit before I found a cure for what I was experiencing. I wanted to create a forum (this website), where I could share my experience with other women of the world. I know others are struggling big time with the same things I went through. And believe me when I tell you that it is a world-wide problem…not just for North American women. And we women like to talk and share. So, that is the reason for my blog; I want to share with you what i learned. To be honest with you, I didn’t figure out the cure myself. I got a little help. Next post I will talk a little about what I learned about this condition and share that information with you. But, then, I want to dedicate some time to tell you my story about how I beat this thing and brought some normalcy back to my intimate life with my husband and to my own self-confidence.

I found out for myself that antibiotics were more of a temporary solution to bacterial vaginosis and, thus, the vaginal smell coming from my body. I also found out that some of the things that I tried at home were effective to some degree, but not long term solutions in and of themselves. Again, I’ll share my story with you in a bit.
